Apple finally announced iOS 17 this Monday (5th) during the opening of WWDC 2023. The new iPhone operating system focuses on a more basic update, without groundbreaking news, but with a good set of updates and refinement of features, meeting the main demands of users.

Journal App

The new Journal app is one of the main highlights of iOS 17. The program serves as a personal diary for the user, allowing them to record contacts, music, locations, photos, podcasts, and exercise data for later reference—it's like a diary, but all on your phone.

All data is end-to-end encrypted, so your routine cannot be accessed by Apple or anyone else without authorization, for example.

StandBy Mode

When you plug in the iPhone to charge, iOS 17 can activate "StandBy Mode". The solution puts the device interface in landscape mode, displaying the time, notifications, weather forecast, alarms, and other details in a larger size, like a digital clock.

The StandBy Mode screen is highly customizable, just like the lock screen. Users can set the font, background, theme, and add widgets to the section that can be switched with gestures.

Phone App with Dynamic Background

Traditional phone calls will be more modern in iOS 17: with Contact Posters, users can set custom screens for each contact, changing the display when receiving a call.

This feature is similar to customizing the lock screen, allowing you to change the background, fonts, colors, and other details to make each contact unique. The wallpaper can also be seen in the Calendar app.

Fortunately, other applications will also be able to adopt call screen customization through an API. This way, apps with calls like WhatsApp and Telegram can take advantage of the system's attention to detail.

Video Messages on FaceTime

In iOS 17, FaceTime becomes more like Snapchat. Apple users will be able to send and receive short video messages.

iMessage with Cutting-Edge Features

Finally, iMessage will allow responding to messages with gestures. Simply swipe to the side to mention it in a new message, just like in competing apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Instagram.

Audio transcription has also arrived in iMessage. The content of an audio message appears at the bottom of the text input.

One of the new features of iMessage is automatic check-in. The tool allows relatives or friends to notify when they arrive at a specific location automatically or, if they don't arrive, provide information about the delay.

Perhaps the coolest thing is the live stickers, a new sticker experience on the iPhone that allows attaching images as real stickers in the chat, all with gestures.

AirDrop with a Focus on Convenience

Sharing your own phone number with someone else on the iPhone will become easier. Apple leveraged the capabilities of AirDrop to introduce NameDrop, a function that allows sending and receiving contact information (email, phone number, and profile picture) by touching one phone to another (or to an Apple Watch).

The Dynamic Island in iOS 17 will also have a special interaction with AirDrop. The transfer progress will be highlighted in the details section.

Enhanced Virtual Keyboard

Apple's virtual keyboard will utilize artificial intelligence to make the autocorrect even better, providing context-based suggestions with the sentence. Additionally, similar to Gmail, Apple's keyboard will also show suggestions to complete the sentence as you type.

Faster Siri

If the user wants, Siri can be summoned by being called by name, eliminating the need to use the phrase "Hey Siri."

Apple has not confirmed the release date of iOS 17 yet. However, the tradition is to launch the new operating system between September and October of the respective year. Everything depends on the success of the system's testing period.
